There are currently five magnet elementary schools in the District: Alta Heights (Math, Art, Science, Technology - MAST) Bel Aire Park (International Baccalaureate - IB) Napa Junction (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math – STEM) Pueblo Vista (Dual Immersion/Environmental Sciences) and Salvador/El Centro (Arts Integration) and one magnet middle school, Harvest (Dual Immersion/International Baccalaureate). “They are also designed to attract students from diverse backgrounds, and are an important component of our efforts to support student racial and socioeconomic integration.” “Magnet schools offer innovative educational programs and create more public school choice for families,” said Maren Rocca-Hunt, who oversees NVUSD’s magnet school program. The District was alerted to the award in late September by Senator Kamala Harris’ office. Over five years, with annual appropriations from Congress, the grant could bring up to $10,121,928 to the three schools, 100 percent funded by the U.S. Department of Education Magnet Schools Assistance Program grant, NVUSD announced today. The Board meets twice a month, usually the first and third Thursdays, at 7 p.m. Each member is elected for a four-year term, and the terms of office are staggered, with elections held every two years. The Board of Trustees is a seven-person, policy-making body for the District, which serves more than 17,000 students in Napa, American Canyon and Yountville. “I look forward to presiding over discussions in the coming year as we seek to strengthen our educational programs and prepare our students for their futures,” Schunk said. Napa Valley Unified School District trustee Joe Schunk was elected 2018 president of the Board of Trustees, and Tom Kensok was elected vice president at a regular meeting of the board last night. "We are sad to see him go, but we all wish him and Michele the very best,” Kensok said. “My wife, Michele, and I are very much looking forward to serving students of poverty, traveling and spending more time with our children and grandchildren,” Sweeney said. ![]() The Board has not finalized the process they will use to search for and hire a new superintendent, but, Kensok said, “We will likely use a process very similar to the one we used in 2010.” The Board’s intent, Kensok said further, is to “stay the course” in the tone and direction Sweeney has set, and to have the new superintendent in place on July 1. “He is a very visible leader, appearing often at school sites and student events, community and parent meetings and more.” Sweeney a deep debt of gratitude for his passion and relentless effort on the behalf of our students for their academic achievement and social growth,” said Board Vice President Thomas Kensok. NVUSD’s graduation rate remains several points hire than the state average, at 89.55 percent. On the California Healthy Kids survey, NVUSD is ranked in the top 99 percentile for school climate. Sweeney, superintendent of Napa Valley Unified School District since July 2010, announced today that he will retire at the end of the current school year, on June 30, 2018.
